Silence of the Lambs crowned best thriller in poll
Posted by Team Boxwish over 1 year ago
It scooped oodles of Oscars, put star Anthony Hopkins firmly on Hollywood’s A-list and made fava beans and Chianti just about the scariest meal ever. Just thinking about it is enough to give you chills and so it’s not surprising that 1991’s The Silence of the Lambs has been voted the best thriller in a new poll. The adaptation of the bestselling novel by Thomas Harris scored 25 percent of the vote in the Yahoo! Movies poll, which was conducted to celebrate the release of French film, Anything For Her starring Diane Kruger out in UK cinemas today. And which other movies did Hannibal Lecter beat? eBay find: Iron Man armour costume replica
Posted by Team Boxwish over 1 year ago
This summer has marked the return of several big screen heroes. John Connor (Christian Bale) in Terminator Salvation, Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) in Star Trek, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and there’s more to come with Sam Witwicky (Shia LeBeouf) in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. However, this time last year we were all embracing a new cinematic idol first making his way in film – Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark in Iron Man. The playboy industrialist certainly stole our hearts here at Boxwish and we can’t wait until next year’s follow-up Iron Man 2. But before then we’ve set our sights on this fantastic replica of the Iron Man armour suit currently under auction on eBay.

After talk that their stores were beginning to stock merchandise for The Twilight Saga: New Moon comes news that some of it has now gone online and is available from their website. So far it’s pretty scant, essentially a T-Shirt and a poster, but it promises to be just the beginning…

Gadget of the week: Motorola 53863 earpiece with microphone from Terminator Salvation
Posted by Team Boxwish over 1 year ago
Here at Boxwish, we’ve never had to lead an army of men against rampaging machines like John Connor (Christian Bale) in Terminator Salvation (not that we’d wimp out, the occasion’s just never occurred). So we can’t say for sure how we’d go about communicating with our fellow resistance fighters, but if anyone knows how to bring Skynet down it’s John, after all he’s been hearing about what a remarkable war hero he’ll be since the moment he was born and so if he wants to use an earpiece and microphone, we say let him. And it appears to us that for this job John favours the Motorola 53863 earning that little gizmo this week’s gadget spot of the week.

Fashion fix of the week: Belstaff Centaur jacket from Terminator Salvation
Posted by Team Boxwish over 1 year ago
There doesn’t seem much to recommend the future according to The Terminator movies. Their take on all things to come sees humans locked in an epic struggle with the machines set against a backdrop of a world ravaged by nuclear apocalypse. Mmm – can’t wait! However, there’s one iddy biddy shining light – the cool clothes as worn by the resistance fighters led by John Connor (Christian Bale) in Terminator Salvation. And one particular item has most certainly gotten our attention – the Belstaff Centaur jacket as seen on Sam Worthington’s Marcus Wright.

Paramore say no to The Twilight Saga: New Moon soundtrack
Posted by Team Boxwish over 1 year ago
It was pipped for Best Song at the MTV Movie Awards by Hannah Montana: The Movie’s “The Climb”, but “Decode” by Paramore has been blasting from the Boxwish sound system since its release last year. The song from the Tennessee rockers provided the anthem to Twilight and appeared in both full and acoustic versions on the film’s bestselling soundtrack along with another Paramore exclusive, “I Caught Myself” and hits from other top rock bands such as Linkin Park and Stephenie Meyer’s favourite, Muse. But according to the group’s drummer Zac Farro they’re not going to be repeating the trick for The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

Auto of the week: Honda XR 100 motorcycle from Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Posted by Team Boxwish over 1 year ago
Tomorrow marks the return of one of cinema’s most beloved sci-fi heroes – John Connor in Terminator Salvation, though he’ll look a little bit different to the last time we saw him in 2003’s Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Now he looks a lot like Batman star Christian Bale, yet back then he was in his early 20s and resembled Sin City actor Nick Stahl and before that a pre-teen Edward Furlong was doing onscreen duty as the future human resistance fighter in Terminator 2: Judgement Day. And it’s this first incarnation of John Connor that we salute in this week’s auto spot with his Honda XR 100 motorcycle.

Daniel Craig's 007 inspires ice lolly
Posted by Team Boxwish over 1 year ago
Don’t play coy – we all remember that scene in Casino Royale when a seriously buff Daniel Craig emerges from the ocean. On first seeing it, guys were busy mentally signing up for gym membership and planning on snagging a pair of Bond’s snug La Perla Grigioperla swimming shorts, while women were lost in a lusty haze, wishing their fellas looked like that, swim shorts or not. It was a gender-reversal spin on the classic Ursula Andress beach scene from 1962’s Dr. No (itself revisited with Halle Berry in 2004’s Die Another Day) and quickly became THE defining moment of Craig’s Bond, so much so that it has now inspired an ice lolly. Get your lips around these ladies!

Merchandise swag: Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack
Posted by Team Boxwish over 1 year ago
The winners of industry awards don’t always prove popular with the public, but there’s always the exception and Slumdog Millionaire, new out on DVD today is certainly that. Not only did the movie sweep the board at the Oscars, the BAFTAs and the Golden Globes, but so did its soundtrack by A. R. Rahman with the standout tune, “Jai Ho” also being re-recorded by pop princesses The Pussycat Dolls. And we can see why it has caught on in such a big way. The Indian film composer’s mix of traditional melodies and modern beats gives the soundtrack a completely unique sound that is both dramatic and absorbing, fun and friendly and so we’re naming it as this week’s merchandise swag spot.

Hold on to your hankies Boxwishers, as for this week’s eBay spot we’ve uncovered a gem from 2004 blubfest The Notebook – a costume screen-worn by Ryan Gosling. The Great Gatsby Rolls Royce to go under the hammer
Posted by Team Boxwish over 1 year ago
Jay Gatsby (played by 70s golden boy Robert Redford) seems to have it all in the Oscar-winning 1974 adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary masterpiece, The Great Gatsby. A gorgeous mansion estate on Long Island Sound, more money than he can spend and an immaculate wardrobe of clothes (designed for the movie by Ralph Lauren). Sure there are some sticky issues with long-time love Daisy (Mia Farrow), but did we mention he drives a 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Ascot Tourer? For that we’d happily swap our favourite grandmother, let alone a few romantic niggles and soon some lucky person will get to ride behind the wheel of the classic auto when it goes under the hammer at Bonhams’s “Greenwich Concours d’Elegance” auction in Connecticut on 7th June.

Cinema release inspirations including Drag Me to Hell
Posted by Team Boxwish over 1 year ago
Morning and welcome to what looks like a promising summer weekend Boxwishers. The sun is shining, the sky is blue and I suspect there’ll be one or two barbeques up and down the country (don’t you just love the smell of burnt food in the afternoon?) and it could prove a timely distraction for movie lovers as this week’s a bit quiet on the cinema front. There are a number of new releases from beat ‘em up action in 12 Rounds to horror in Drag Me To Hell through to psychological thrills in Obsessed, but there’s just nothing epic in that summer blockbuster mould until Terminator Salvation next Wednesday. But if you burn in the sun, love it when WWE wrestlers have a stab at acting or aren’t one for blockbusters, this could be the week for you…

The Duchess costumes on display at Holkham Hall
Posted by Team Boxwish over 1 year ago
Ever wondered just how teeny tiny Keira Knightley’s waist is? Well speculate no more as a sumptuous gown as worn by the Brit actress in last year’s period drama The Duchess is now on display at Holkham Hall. The film stars Keira as Georgiana Spencer, an 18th century aristocrat celebrated as the “Empress of Fashion” who upon marrying Ralph Fiennes’s Duke of Devonshire becomes the Duchess of the title. And one of the exquisite frocks, described as being “made from seersucker fabric and finished with lace trim and a silk sash” will join a costume as worn by co-star Fiennes and three children’s dresses in an exhibition at the Norfolk stately home.

Gadget spot of the week: Sony Ericsson Z310 mobile phone from Seven Pounds

We’ve known him as Agent J, John Hancock and even Muhammad Ali. We’ve seen him dressed well in iconic Belstaff gear (I Am Legend) or in shabby suits with a greying afro (The Pursuit of Happyness). We’ve seen him love and rely on technology with neutralisers (the Men in Black movies) and we’ve seen it turn on him (I, Robot), and this week we’re celebrating a more low-key piece of gadgetry as used onscreen by the former Fresh Prince, Will Smith – the Sony Ericsson Z310 mobile phone as seen in drama Seven Pounds, new out on DVD this week.

Angels & Demons and Harry Potter boost tourism
Posted by Team Boxwish over 1 year ago
“Screenspiration”, the phenomenon of people visiting the locations as seen in movies seems to be kicking up a gear of late. The tourism industry of Australia has benefitted from the Nicole Kidman/ Hugh Jackman romance of the same name, The Smithsonian Institute is expecting a swell of interest thanks to the Ben Stiller comedy sequel Night at the Museum 2 and even films that haven’t been released yet are casting their spell on the public. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 isn’t scheduled to hit cinemas until 19th November 2010 and yet fans are already flocking to Wales, where critical scenes in the seventh instalment in the boy wizard’s adventures are being filmed. And did we mention that Rome is also getting a boost from Angels & Demons? Phew. Who needs holiday brochures when you’ve got the movies?

Fancy grabbing a piece of 80s movie nostalgia that goes above and beyond novelty desk toys and retro T-shirts? Well, we’ve got the ultimate treat for cinephiles with deep pockets – the house as seen in classic John Hughes comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Yours for a cool $2.3 million, this 5,300-square-foot property in the Highland Park area of Chicago, Illinois is recognisable as the onscreen home to Ferris’s (Matthew Broderick) downbeat buddy Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck) and is best remembered for the sad demise of the Ferrari 250GT California Spyder belonging to Cameron’s dad that goes hurling out of the distinctive glass wall (though as is famously known, a kit car was used for the stunt).

Star Wars named best sci-fi film ever
Posted by Team Boxwish over 1 year ago
With Star Trek still pulling in big numbers and Terminator Salvation opening last week in the US and next Wednesday here in the UK, modern sci-fi is riding high. Yet these blockbusters have a long way to go until they can go toe to toe with some of the granddaddies of the genre, and to find out which movies merit such respect website Moviefone conducted an online poll on the subject. And according to the good folks that voted in the survey, the best sci-fi film ever is 1977 space spectacle Star Wars. A cute birthday present for the George Lucas movie that celebrated its 32nd big one yesterday. Auto of the week: Chevrolet Corvette C2 from Star Trek
Posted by Team Boxwish over 1 year ago
It can be hard to watch when cars get trashed in movies – especially when they’re particularly sweet rides. Want to kick the crap out of an old banger? Be our guest, but reducing to scrap something as special as a Corvette is criminal. Yet Hollywood keeps on having a go. A 1985 Chevrolet Corvette C4 feels the fury of Walter Sobchak (John Goodman) and his crow bar in The Big Lebowski. Ouch! And a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray [C2] goes for a ride when accidentally attached to a plane before crash landing in Con Air. Eek! And now another Corvette is being shown very little love, this time in sci-fi blockbuster Star Trek when the young James T. Kirk (played by Evan Almighty’s Jimmy Bennett) steals his step-dad’s pride and joy, a Chevrolet Corvette C2 and goes for a spin. Let’s hope he’s got insurance…

Merchandise swag: Night at the Museum 2 video game
Posted by Team Boxwish over 1 year ago
The Smithsonian Institute, home to all the nocturnal adventures in new Ben Stiller fantasy comedy Night at the Museum 2 is hoping that attendance numbers will be boasted by its current cinematic status, but for those of you that can’t make it to see the exhibits themselves in Washington D.C. we have a canny alternative – the video game of the movie. Yes, there’s no need to shell out for a trip to Capital City as this game puts you right in the thick of the action and just like the onscreen action, the displays all come to life.
