Not much planned for the weekend? A yearning to see some sumptuous movie costumes and local to the Worcester area? Of course you are. Well, have we got news for you as the city’s stunning Cathedral is hosting a new exhibition of screen clothes from this Saturday. Titled “Starstruck in the Cathedral”, the display presents up to 100 familiar costumes as previously modelled on some of Hollywood’s leading lights including Keira Knightley, Kate Winslet, Meryl Streep, Demi Moore, Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow, Heath Ledger and Cate Blanchett and plenty more. It’s THE place to be for all film fashion followers in the West Midlands – and that’s saying something. Read over for more.
The most prominent and exciting costumes of the exhibition’s collection include Johnny Depp’s outrageous pirate get-up as Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean, Cate Blanchett’s royal gown from Elizabeth I and Meryl Streep’s dramatic look from The French Lieutenant’s Woman. Added to this are others from TV, many sourced from esteemed film costumiers such as Angels and Cosprop and even the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).
Cosprop staff are also lending a hand with the staging of the costumes, draping them expertly on mannequins that are further shown off by a special lighting system courtesy of Simon Swift of Light Unlimited. Soundtrack music from the films will further enhance the mood and to help you navigate the displays, they’ll be arranged according to theme with a catwalk to showcase the most glamorous of the bunch.
All involved are excited at the exhibition with Peter Atkinson, the Dean of Worcester enthusing: “It’s a truly majestic backdrop for these beautiful costumes. There will be over eighty costumes, and we will be creating several dramatic tableaux, incorporating props to give a really theatrical feel.”
The exhibition starts on Saturday and will run for three weeks, closing on 6th September. Doors will open from 10am to 5pm on Mondays to Saturdays and from 12.30pm to 3.30pm on Sundays. Tickets cost £7.50 for adults and to order these online or to find out more about the exhibition, visit the Cathedral’s website here.
