What do you think about Funny People's MySpace placement?

Funny People, the latest comedy outing for the Judd Apatow gang, has topped the US box office this weekend, knocking those heroic guinea-pigs from G-Force from the top spot, albeit in somewhat lacklustre and underwhelming form. Reviews for the Adam Sandler/ Seth Rogen story about stand-up comedians has been decidedly mixed, though it’s not just the jokes that have impacted on audiences but the heavy brand placement of social networking site MySpace. Of course, less-than-subtle product placement is nothing new for Hollywood; however in this case MySpace claim they didn’t pay for it and yet they’ve scored one of the biggest movie spots this summer.

The MySpace name appears as Sandler’s George and Rogen’s Ira (named after the Gershwin brothers) perform at a MySpace comedy gig (for which George brags he’s being paid $300,000) and weigh in with jokes such as “I wonder if Tom [Anderson, the founder of MySpace] and Craig from Craigslist would ever get in a fight… Who’s tougher?” There’s also a shout-out to Facebook, though less flattering (“F**ck Facebook… in the face!”)

By referencing these very of-the-moment sites, Funny People is clearly hoping to look cool and relevant with other movies such as Iron Man, He’s Just Not That Into You and SuperBad also having featured MySpace. But is there a fear that such unashamed name-dropping, “a 10 minute MySpace commercial” as TechCrunch dubs it, reflects poorly on the film despite MySpace not paying for the slot?

It’s certainly something that has sparked debate among those that caught the movie at the weekend. “As if any advertisements will work for MySpace at this point,” opines reader Mark on TechCrunch, while Priyanka D observes that “So the social network wars comes to movies…”

What do you make of it Boxwishers? Are you happy for brand placements, if not paid for, or is it the prominence of them that gets your proverbial goat? Leave a comment and let us know.
