It took $19.2m in its opening weekend, making it the 3rd highest at the US box office, was the most popular in the UK, and it seems things can only get better for The Time Traveler’s Wife which is now set to become a TV series too. The story follows Henry DeTamble (Eric Bana), a librarian born with a genetic disorder which causes him to travel through time at random intervals and Clare Abshire (Rachel McAdams), his long suffering wife. Filled with romance and complications, it’s heart wrenching to watch and we’re sure this new ABC and Warner Bros. version will have us reaching for the tissues once again.

Writing and executive producing the series will be Marta Kaufman, the co-creator of TV’s Friends and Veronica’s Closet. In case you were going to accuse them of jumping on the band wagon, it seems ABC has been talking to Kaufman for years about bringing The Time Traveler’s Wife to the small screen. The TV network considers that by exploring the story over several series’, it would give the love and complex narratives time to evolve, and we’re eager to see if they’re right.

Back in 2003, before the book was even released, Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt’s production company, Plan B bought the film rights to the book, by Audrey Niffenegger. Years later, and after the couple split, the film’s screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin admits he wrote it with the couple in mind: “I thought Brad and Jennifer would be perfect for this film. I just saw them as a perfect version of Henry and Clare. I just found them equally attractive and equally compelling and in terms of the Hollywood arena at that time, they were as good a couple as you could find.”

It is Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams who get to portray the ill-fated couple in the film though, and now we’re curious as to who will star in the TV version. Are television adaptations of films the new Hollywood trend? Remember when we told you about the Kung Fu Panda and Parenthood TV spin-offs back in May? Or could this be a flop like the 1990 television adaptation of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, which incidentally starred Jennifer Aniston, wonder what happened to her.
