It’s very rarely that we don’t have the volume cranked up to 11 on the Boxwish jukebox. Yes, we love listening to all the latest seven-inch records on the hit parade here at Boxwish HQ, a special favourite being music from the movies. From the likes of Forrest Gump to Juno, Rocky to Into the Wild we can’t get enough of stonking cinematic soundtracks and also their more overlooked cousin, the film score. And so we pricked up our ears at news of the winners and shakers at this year’s World Soundtrack Awards which closed the 36th Ghent International Film Festival on Saturday. And coming out on top at the showbiz event was two-time Oscar nominee Alexandre Desplat, who took home the Film Composer of the Year 2009 gong as well as the prize for Best Original Film Score of the Year for his work on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Click over to find out who else earned a pat on the back.

Adding to his Oscar haul was film composer of the moment, A.R. Rahman who was once again honoured for his contribution to Slumdog Millionaire winning Best Original Song Written for Film for “Jai Ho”. New talent was also applauded as Nico Muhly was named Discovery of the Year for his musical stylings on the acclaimed, The Reader and London-born Christopher Slaski (who studied with the great Ennio Morricone) took home the Sabam Award for Best Young European Composer. Not that age and experience went unnoticed, as three-time Oscar winner Marvin Hamlisch (The Way We Were, The Sting) picked up the Lifetime Achievement Award and the public had their say, with Carter Burwell getting the Public Choice Award for his moody music in vampire phenomenon, Twilight.

Many of the winners, such as Hamlisch and Desplat performed, as did last year’s Discovery of the Year winner, Mark Streitenfeld (whose next music will be heard in 2010’s epic, Robin Hood) and the ceremony was attended by a number of composing luminaries including Reinhold Heil (The International), Alti Ovarsson (Vantage Point) and Andrew Lockington (Journey to the Centre of the Earth).

A big Boxwish congratulations to all the winners and we’re looking forward to hearing their next projects.
