Susan Boyle tipped for Bond soundtrack song

It’s been a helluva year for Susan Boyle. After her first audition for TV talent contest, Britain’s Got Talent turned her into an overnight singing sensation back in April, she’s gone on to break all number of records. Her debut album, “I Dreamed a Dream” (order it here in the UK and here in the US) is the fastest-selling CD ever in the UK and is on course to be the biggest seller of the year in the US. And having conquered the world of music, it seems like she could soon be moving into cinema, being touted as the next singer to belt out a Bond tune.
The film, penciled in for release in November 2011, is still in development with very little confirmed for it (other than it’ll star Daniel Craig), including a title (it’s simply referred to as Bond 23). However, such details are irrelevant when it comes to James Bond flicks, the theme song almost standing alone as an institution in its own right. And it’s this incredible popularity that has made being chosen for the task a massive musical privilege and honour, one that established artists aren’t above publically pleading for.
The inclusion of SuBo as a potential candidate is an intriguing idea. She certainly has the voice for it, being more in the classic Shirley Bassey mould than recent, edgier more contemporary artists like Jack White, Alicia Keys and Chris Cornell.
And she’s got supporters in camp Bond with Monty Norman, the man behind the legendary 007 theme tune hailing SuBo as “great”, adding: “They’ll think seriously because she’s got the right kind of sweeping voice.” While Lee Pfeiffer, co-author of The Essential James Bond book believes the Scottish singer is “a throwback to those great days when the likes of Shirley Bassey would be asked to sing”.
But is the newly rebooted Bond franchise looking for a throwback? We’re not convinced. Yet perhaps the power of the people is behind SuBo. After all, it helped Rage Against the Machine score a Christmas number one. The Facebook support group starts now!
