What do you when your country faces a slump in tourism? Such is the fate of Spain, which has seen its visitor numbers drop 2.3 per cent to 57.3 million people a year, a decline that’s relegated it to being only the third most visited country in the world, losing its second spot to the United States. And to make matters worse, the government anticipates this drop will continue with a further 10 per cent lost in 2010. The answer: Hollywood, of course! It’s not the first time local charms have been brought to the big screen to tantalise potential tourists with Woody Allen’s 2008 rom-com Vicky Cristina Barcelona a “love letter to Barcelona and from Barcelona to the world.” And now hoping to work that ol’ showbiz razzle dazzle on behalf of Spain is Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz’s new action comedy, Knight and Day.

Not much is really known about the movie which premiered its teaser trailer a few weeks back and is expected to hit cinemas in the summer, other than it reunites Vanilla Sky co-stars Tom and Cameron, has a dubious poster (which has been much mocked by movie bloggers) and looks to be an international feast for the eyes. Along with Spain, it boasts such enticing locales as Puerto Rico and Austria, yet it’s in Spain that the starry pair has attracted the most press attention and likewise aims to be the location that most benefits from their presence.

It’s known that a bull run scene was filmed recently in Cadiz in southwestern Spain with Tom and Cameron racing behind the bulls on a motorcycle (pictured), while others have also been shot in Seville. The Cadiz tourism industry has sought to make filming on Spanish soil easier for foreign filmmakers, increasingly approving shooting in the old town and its narrow alleys, policing onlookers and providing casting offices.

They hope such efforts will promote a picture of the area which is rarely caught on film, suggesting to people holiday destinations they hadn’t even known existed. “This is part of efforts by the municipality to promote the city, attract film producers and project Cadiz’s tourism image internationally,” confirms Cadiz councilman Bruno Garcia.

Will Knight and Day work its movie magic? If past big screen adventures with a strong local flavour such as Sherlock Holmes (London), Brüno (Austria), The Hangover (Las Vegas) and Angels and Demons (Rome) are anything to go by, we reckon it’s a big fat sí!
