He loves parfait, has “freakish mutant babies” with a female dragon and can belt out quite the musical number with Puss in Boots. Yes, we’re talking about Donkey, the smart-mouthed sidekick from the Shrek movies who has been voted the most-loved movie animal in a new poll by DVD rental service LOVEFiLM. The animated ass (we’re not being rude – that’s its name!), voiced by Hollywood comedian Eddie Murphy might not be a “noble steed”, but he sure is popular snapping up more than one in four votes polled from the 2,000+ counted. Coming second to Donkey was Simba, the curious lion cub that grows to become a fearless pack leader in Disney’s 1994 smash The Lion King. Third was Baloo the Bear from sing-along masterpiece The Jungle Book, fourth went to Dory, the memory-challenged Regal Tang fish from Disney•Pixar’s 2003 hit Finding Nemo and rounding out the top five was Sid the Sloth from the prehistoric Ice Age movies, the latest of which, Dawn of the Dinosaurs is new in cinemas this week.

Missing out on the top spots were Dumbo, the big-eared elephant; Lassie, the ever-helpful collie dog; Aslan, the majestic lion and Garfield, the laconic cat with a hunger for lasagne.

“We challenge any film fan not to love the Donkey character from the Shrek movies,” said Fliss White of LOVEFiLM. “The fact that lots of the titles like Ice Age and Shrek are in their third or fourth cinema outing shows just how popular film animals are today, and 3D imagery creates a host of opportunities for new titles.”

We’ve got to agree. Donkey’s presence in the Shrek films remains a constant source of cool points in the career of Eddie Murphy and who can resist a donkey that wants to make waffles? Not us!
