Shark fears force closure of Jaws beach

It’s one of the most iconic thrillers of all time, and the theme music alone can scare people out of the sea. Forget modern 3-D slashers and psychological thrillers, Steven Spielberg’s Jaws is the original horror movie. It seems life was imitating art at the weekend as four great white sharks were spotted around the area where the movie was filmed. Luckily officials have not followed in the footsteps of the films mayor, and the beaches have been closed until further notice.
The great whites were spotted close to Martha’s Vineyard, where the fictional resort of Amity was filmed, during Labour Day weekend – usually one of the busiest times for the area. Biologists from the Massachusetts State Division of Marine Fisheries managed to tag two of the four sharks with electric tracking devices; the first time great whites have been tagged in the Atlantic Ocean. The three metre long monsters were caught and tagged by a harpooner and a state shark expert, a similar crew to that in the film.
No swimming signs have been put up at North Beach, Lighthouse Beach, South Beach, Hardings Beach and Nauset Beach, where swimmers watched for fins protruding from the otherwise peaceful waters. Sharks are common in waters surrounding the Cape Cod area during summer, although great white sightings are rare. The film might have sparked a worldwide fear of sharks but there’s nothing to worry about as the last fatality by a shark in Massachusetts was in 1936.
