Manhattan was the place to be yesterday as the open auditions for bit parts in the sequel to last year’s girlie blockbuster Sex and the City opened their doors to the public. As the Bat signal lights up the dark gloom of Gotham alerting the caped crusader that he’s needed, so fashionistas from across New York got wind of the casting call (perhaps a Manolo Blahnik silhouette was projected into the sky?) and they turned up in their thousands, 5,000 approximately, eager and ready to share the screen with their fashion idols Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon). And how many of them made the cut? That’d be telling.

In fact, all the hopefuls are now waiting to see if their movie ambitions are to be fulfilled, with an automated text or email relaying the all-important news. And they’ll all be desperately crossing their fingers, having endured 90-degree heat during their long wait in the queue which trailed from 18th St. between Sixth and Seventh Aves. to 19th St. and back again, with many dressing up for the occasion. The most common theme was unsurprisingly SATC with many riffing on Carrie’s quirky style and flashing the designer labels, while others opted for the more classic look of Audrey Hepburn’s original Manhattan fashion pin-up, Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

This eclectic mix certainly fits the casting call plea for “fashion models, celebrity types, upscale socialites, urban club goers, gays and lesbians, international types (Middle Eastern, Arabic, Asian, European, British) and professional soccer players” and by 3pm, staff at the Metropolitan Pavilion had to turn away 1,000 people. Not that everyone who got through was thrilled by the experience with one wannabe whinging: “I feel like an animal. Now I know why they call it a cattle call.”

And all for just $93.50 plus overtime for a 12 to 16-hour-day. Oh and cinematic immortality, that little thing.

Find out how to work some SATC style here or steal Holly Golighty’s look from Breakfast at Tiffany’s here.
