Here’s territory we’ve never explored before here at Boxwish – a biopic that prompts fans to seek out the grave site of the film’s subject. In this case, we’re talking about notorious 1930s bank robber John Dillinger who is played in new gangster drama Public Enemies by Hollywood eccentric Johnny Depp. Buried at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana, the law-breaker christened by the FBI “Public Enemy Number One” has long interested people who have then journeyed to visit his last resting place; however the Michael Mann movie has caused these attendance numbers to soar.

“We’ve always had many visitors to John Dillinger’s grave, continuously,” reveals Crown Hill Cemetery’s president Keith Norwalk. “But this past week has been just remarkable.” Over 100 visitors descended upon the place just last weekend and with the film now on general release in the US, it’s expected that these numbers will continue to grow. “I didn’t know what it was really about. I thought I’d come down here, get some information before I see the movie tonight,” offered cemetery visitor Brandon Spurlock.

We’re the first to admit that this latest case of movie inspiration isn’t for everyone and for many will seem distasteful, grim and morbid, however it’s another strong reminder of the power of films to inspire, provoke, educate and seep into the lives of those that watch them and brings up the issue whether there is, or should be a limit to this?

Of course, not everything from the bombastic world of cinema is ripe for replicating and Johnny Depp has recently said he doesn’t want his Dillinger to be interpreted as a role model, yet where should this line be drawn and would you visit the grave site of a real-life person thanks to a film?
