It’s all about Julia Roberts this Valentine’s Day. Head to the cinema for the most romantic night of the year and there she is, her sparkly smile shining out in ensemble rom-com Valentine’s Day (along with practically every other star in Hollywood), or stay in for a snuggle in front of a classic love story and chances are she’ll pop up there too. What are we talking about? Only a new poll to find Britain’s most beloved Valentine’s Day movie and coming in to take the top spot is the film that made Julia a household name, 1990’s modern Cinderella story, Pretty Woman.

The romance about a prostitute and a business hotshot (played by Richard Gere) was selected by over 3,500 people questioned by TV magazine, Radio Times, beating the happy ending of Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell in Four Weddings and a Funeral into second place. And Hugh and Julia prove to be a pretty popular coupling in their own right with their lovey-dovey flick, Notting Hill also making the top five along with Tom Hanks/ Meg Ryan love story Sleepless in Seattle.

Former rom-com queen, Meg Ryan scored a second entry lower in the list with When Harry Met Sally and Billy Wilder masterpiece, Some Like It Hot and French fancy, Amelie also charted.

Describing the charm and appeal of Pretty Woman, film critic Barry Norman says: “What develops here is a modern-day fairy tale, a cross between Pygmalion and Cinderella for a raunchier age, an endearing love story in which masculine and feminine wish fulfilment are made celluloid.”

And there’s shopping. Lots of shopping.

What’s your top pick for a romantic night in, Boxwishers? Do any of these past favourites light your fire or do you prefer something a bit more quirky and bitter-sweet like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or The Apartment? A full-on blubfest like An Affair to Remember or The Notebook? Or something a bit more guy-friendly like True Romance or Juno? Leave a comment and let us know.
