Nine dominates Satellite Award nominations
Posted by Team Boxwish 3 months ago
Congratulations to Rob Marshall’s Nine which has notched up an impressive 11 nominations at the 2009 Satellite Awards. The glitzy and glamorous song and dance flick has come out on top for this, the 14th annual awards, as voted for by the International Press Academy, although whether it’ll take home all 11 of the prizes come 20th December at the InterContinental Hotel, Century City is still up for grabs. And hoping to take some of the shine off Nine’s razzle-dazzle is Disney’s The Princess and The Frog which has two nominations for film composer, Randy Newman’s soundtrack.
Like so many memorable Disney soundtracks of recent times, The Princess and the Frog boasts original songs by celebrated composer Randy Newman and having notched up 26 awards in his illustrious career (peaking with an Oscar for Monsters Inc.) he’s looking to add to his haul thanks to the Satellite Awards.
In the Best Original Song category, he’s nominated twice for “Almost There” (performed by Dreamgirls’ Anika Noni Rose as the titular Princess Tiana) and the film’s opening number, “Down in New Orleans” (as sung by New Orleans musical legend, Dr. John). These odds should help him in facing off against Nine, which is nominated for “Cinema Italiano” (as sung by Kate Hudson), “I See in Color” by Mary J. Blige for Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire (which has five noms and is included in the Ten Best Films of 2009 list) and the less fancied “We are the Children of the World” from The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and "The Weary Kind” from Crazy Heart.
It’s a more open field in the Best Original Score category. George Clooney comedy/ drama Up in the Air has proved a hit with other awards lately and so could do well for composer Rolfe Kent, but there’s also industry momentum for Michael Giacchino shortlisted last week for a Grammy for his Up soundtrack. In the more mainstream corner are Carter Burwell and Karen O (from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) for their collaboration on Where The Wild Things Are, and also crossing their fingers are Marvin Hamlisch for The Informant!, Gabriel Yared for Amelia and Elliot Goldenthal for Public Enemies.
And, while we love us some movie music, we’re also fashion hounds here at Boxwish and so are intrigued by those named in the Best Costume Design category. Unsurprisingly Nine makes an appearance and with such gorgeous clothes horses as Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard and Kate Hudson not to mention partnerships with Swarovski and Chopard, costumer Colleen Atwood looks to be a firm favourite.
The long-time Tim Burton collaborator will face stiff competition from two-time Oscar-winner Sandy Powell for period drama, The Young Victoria, as well as Monique Prudhomme for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (read more on these costumes in Related Content, right), Tim Yip for John Woo’s Red Cliff and Consolata Boyle for French fancy, Cheri.
We look forward to hearing who wins and then pretending it’s exactly as we predicted – bring on the awards show!
