New Sherlock Holmes gives deerstalker and famous quote the boot

What makes an iconic movie character? Their costume, their props, their dialogue? Well if so, we could be presented with an unfamiliar-looking Sherlock Holmes come Christmas. We’ll meet this new spin on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle character to be played by Iron Man’s Robert Downey Jr. in an action thriller directed and co-written by Guy Ritchie and all the clues suggest that it’s a classic case of throwing out the rule book. As Daniel Craig’s James Bond didn’t say “the name’s Bond, James Bond” and Robin Hood in the upcoming Russell Crowe flick of the same name won’t wear tights, so Sherlock Holmes is also reinventing himself for a modern audience and one of the stars of the movie, Rachel McAdams has been revealing to MTV just what changes we’re in for.
First up, the unconventional detective won’t be saying the famous line, “Elementary, my dear Watson,” as McAdams admits she doesn’t remember it from the script. “I don’t know if he ever worked it in anywhere,” she revealed. While it’s also a no-go for the deerstalker hat that is synonymous with the role. “He didn’t wear a deerstalker either. Well, you’ve got to watch the hair.”
Perhaps these two details aren’t being overlooked by accident but omitted through attention to the source material. Fans of the books know that Holmes never actually says the line in the literature and it was only introduced through the films. Likewise the distinctive headwear was never specified in the text, but an “ear-flapped travelling cap” was, prompting illustrator Sidney Paget to draw a deerstalker and from there the association grew.
Yet, McAdams reveals that there’s one point from which Ritchie’s Holmes hasn’t strayed and interestingly it’s one from the books – his pipe. “He does have the pipe!” she chirps. Yes and a six-pack according to early set shots. Since when did Holmes hit the gym?
