If you’re a budding filmmaker, take note as movie industry bible MovieMaker magazine has named its top ten best American cities for independent moviemaking and coming out on top is none other than Albuquerque, New Mexico. Yup, unlikely though it may seem but the Duke City has it, climbing from its fifth spot in last year’s list to the top spot thanks to such recent movies as Terminator Salvation, The Book of Eli (pictured), Sunshine Cleaning, Gamer, Observe and Report and The Men Who Stare at Goats. A respectable rise that is very much to the credit of the filmmaking community in New Mexico, yet perhaps the most intriguing revelation is the absence of last year’s winner, Chicago.

Rewind 12 months and the Windy City was riding high on the back of mega-hit The Dark Knight and the then upcoming Public Enemies, a 30 per cent tax incentive helping it secure the coveted top spot. But now its truly fallen off the radar, not even making it into the top ten.

Instead, coming in second is Los Angeles (shown off to such splendid effect in 500 Days of Summer recently), third is Shreveport, Louisiana (another climber, this time from fourth to third thanks to X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Year One), fourth is the ever-familiar New York (which was voted the most cinematic city in the world by filmmakers in 2008) and rounding out the top five is Austin, Texas (rising from tenth to fifth with the likes of Bandslam).

The rest of the list shaped up like this: 6. Stamford, CT, 7. Boston, MA, 8. Detroit, MI, 9. Philadelphia, PA and 10. Seattle, WA.

So, if you’re the next big thing, head to Albuquerque!
