We love it when movies get caught up in a cycle of true-life inspiration. We enjoyed how celebrity chef Julia Child inspired office drone Julie Powell to cook, a move which led to her blogging about her results, which in turn leapt from monitor to page as a book collecting together her online diaries and then onto the big screen as a film (Julie & Julia) and then lastly, encouraged audiences to go hit the kitchen. And now it looks like a similar chain effect promises to kick off with fellow true-life tale, Eat, Pray, Love. This also begins in the real world as, after a nasty divorce, writer Elizabeth Gilbert set about on a soul-searching journey around the world and learnt how to “eat pray and love”. She then shared the experience as a book in 2006, entitled (yup, you’ve guessed it) Eat, Pray, Love which became a literary sensation and now it’s set to be a movie starring Julia Roberts in the lead role expected next year. And finally, this movie has prompted luxury travel company, Spirit Quest Tours to introduce an “Eat, Pray & Love Bali” tour.

The Las Vegas-based travel boutique is hoping the tour will help people replicate Elizabeth’s journey, which took in Bali, Italy, Indonesia and India by sampling the delights of Bali for a week. It hopes to roll it out from May next year and include a number of the writer’s eye-opening experiences such as palm readings by local shaman, Ketut Liyer, meditation, yoga, praying at Hindu temples and open air showers.

Greg Roach, the founder of Spirit Quest Tours enthuses: “The ‘Eat’ part is easy, since the food on Bali is so wonderful. Then, we’re teaching everyone how Balinese Hindus pray, and offering meditation and yoga. Of course, everything in Bali is about love.”

Not that it will be an exact replica of Gilbert’s quest for self-discovery, as Roach warns: “Our guests expect a four star experience. Gilbert just rented a cottage.” And as such, the tour is a little glossier and fancier than the original and soon-to-be-seen onscreen trek, but as long as it features a little eating, praying and love, we reckon they’ve covered their bases.
