Miley Cyrus soundtrack song not popular with The X-Factor fans

Nearly 20 million of us tuned in last night to see South Shields lad, Joe McElderry crowned 2009’s champion of singing contest, The X-Factor and during the two hour musical feast, which also featured star performances from Sir Paul McCartney, George Michael, Leona Lewis and a duet between last year’s finalists, Alexandra Burke and boy band, JLS, both Joe and runner-up, Essex lad, Olly Murs debuted the winner’s song, “The Climb” as originally recorded by US teen star, Miley Cyrus in Hannah Montana: The Movie. And while the cover of the upbeat country pop ditty is a sure thing to become the Christmas number one (winners of The X Factor have taken the seasonal top spot for the last four years), some fans of the show aren’t happy with the song selection.
A survey by online bingo site, 888ladies.com found that two thirds of voters were unhappy with the Miley Cyrus song being covered by the TV show winner. This makes it a tough few days for the song after it was disqualified from the Grammys when Disney revealed that it hadn’t been written specifically for Hannah Montana: The Movie, making it ineligible for inclusion (see Related Content, right).
However, despite this initial backlash, it’s been revealed that the soundtrack song wasn’t selected just for the British market, but with the US also in mind. A source close to The X-Factor’s Simon Cowell revealed: “Simon has already set the wheels in motion for Joe’s stateside success. He has been bombarded with offers from TV and film studios and is in the enviable position of having several incredible offers.”
“They all want someone to fill Zac Efron’s shoes, as he’s fast moving out of the teen market now he’s 22. Having a cute English guy take on the mantle is every US producer’s dream because the English accent is seen as a real draw.”
And “The Climb” could be the start of this American dream. “Picking “The Climb” was all part of the strategy,” continues the anonymous insider. “Simon chose the song as soon as it became clear Joe was in pole position. It’s a song that will work well in Britain and the US. But obviously the American market is where all the money is.”
Already Joe’s version of the song has been downloaded thousands of times since last night and has prompted a price war between stores undercutting each other to sell the most. Maybe those original nay-sayers will soon change their minds…
