Julie and Julia sends cookbook sales rocketing

Love the book, go see the movie. Love the movie, go get the book and so it has played out, the long-running relationship between cinema and literature. And now the silver screen has spawned another hit sourced from not one, but two books – Julie and Julia. The film stars Meryl Streep as famed 1960s cook Julia Child, whose life is contrasted with that of Julie Powell (Amy Adams) who dedicates a year of her life to cooking the many French cuisine recipes from Childs’s seminal cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking. And the movie, which is earning rave reviews from critics (especially for Streep’s performance), has prompted the sales of all things Childs to go through the roof.
Currently the classic cookbook, published over 50 years ago and credited with introducing the American public to French cooking is happily perched at the number one spot on Amazon.com’s bestseller list. It’s similarly beating all competition at fellow book chain Barnes & Noble.com, and the book’s publisher Alfred A. Knopf quickly ordered a further 75,000 copies when Amazon.com temporarily sold out on Monday.
The craze isn’t solely online either with stores also selling out of copies of the book, being besieged by cinemagoers eager to recreate the onscreen food in the comfort of their own kitchens. And the appetite for such foodie fare has seen other Childs tomes also creep up the Amazon.com sales charts, including My Life in France (no. 17), Julia’s Kitchen Wisdom (no. 19) and Mastering the Art of French Cooking: Volume Two (no. 23) .
All this Childs success has overshadowed that of Powell’s, Julie and Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously, the book that inspired Julie’s half the story, has also climbed the book charts, though at no. 37 its ascent is somewhat less spectacular than that of Julia’s.
Still, it’s all good foodie fun, and the more people inspired to become culinary gurus the better. Saves us having to cook!
