With the holidays well and truly over; the mulled wine all drunk, the mince pies all munched and the sofa left sagging after days of non-stop lounging; it’s back to the business of show and what better post-Christmas pick-me-up than musing on who’ll walk off with the trophies as awards season approaches? Back in December, we reported on a new set of award nominations virtually every day and this clamour for industry glory shows no sign of abating now we’re in 2010 as the Online Film Critics Society has announced its top contenders from 2009. Leading the pack is Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds with eight noms, closely followed by The Hurt Locker with seven and Up in the Air with four and Avatar with three. But the music category is absent all of these heavy-hitters with Boxwish fave, Where the Wild Things Are facing some seriously stiff competition.

The soundtrack to the Maurice Sendak adaptation features the musical talents of Karen O (from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Twilight composer, Carter Burwell and while, we’re not here to play favourites, has been a staple on the Boxwish jukebox since it was released. One of its most charming songs, the single “Where is Love” scored a Grammy nod after “The Climb” as sung by pop princess, Miley Cyrus in Disney’s Hannah Montana: The Movie was disqualified and with a number of other award nominations, it’s looking good to take home some prizes.

However, facing off against the Wild Things is Marvin Hamlisch’s score for The Informant! and Alexandre Desplat’s contribution to Fantastic Mr Fox. Though one fella is looking to bend the odds with two nominations, namely Michael Giacchino for his work on Star Trek and Up (the latter with four noms).

All have been widely shortlisted across the various award bodies, it’s just a case of seeing who comes out on top, though noticeable by its absence in this category is musical extravaganza, Nine. Maybe the lukewarm reviews and box office nose-dive are dooming this contender.

The Online Film Critics announce their winners on Wednesday 6th January. Check out the full list of nominees here.
