Heathers to be revived on the small screen

High school hassles have long been a focus of Hollywood writers, if only for the possibility of giving us wildly dysfunctional relationships, shallow characters and rebellious behaviour, alongside youthful good-looks and eye-catching fashion. So it’s with a massive grin on our faces that Team Boxwish is able to tell you that the darkest and most disturbingly comical movie of the high school-genre is being retold for the small screen. Yes, Heathers (of the death-by-drain-cleaning-liquid, and “Swatch dogs and Diet Coke heads” fame) is being adapted for TV, and so, as J.D would say – “greetings and salutations” – glad to have you back.

The 1989 black-comedy is often seen gracing lists of the most iconic high school movies, and the film certainly takes the idea of teenage cliques (all the girls of the popular group share the name Heather) and bullying (JD, played by Christian Slater, and Veronica, played by Winona Ryder kill off their antagonisers one by one) to the satirical extreme. There have been rumours of a remake in camp-Hollywood for some time now, but we think the diary entry structure of the story lends itself pretty well to a television series.

We’re told Sony Pictures is to produce, whilst Mark Rizzo is to be writer and exec producer, alongside Jenny Bicks who worked on the TV series of Sex and the City. The company with the rights to the Heathers franchise, Lakeshore Entertainment have stated, “we had a title, and talked about doing a film remake at times. But doing it for TV seemed like a fresh and original idea.”

It’s been reported that all the characters are being brought back from the 80s annals of silver screen history, including the croquet-playing narcissistic Heathers and the slushy-drinking star-crossed lovers Veronica and J.D. The film has undoubtedly influenced a whole host of other cynical teen-angst flicks after it, among which sit 2004’s Mean Girls, 1995’s Clueless, the American Pie franchise that kicked off in 1999, and even 1996’s spoof-horror Scream.

So what do you lot think of Michael Lehmann’s original feature taking the form of a TV show? Do you think the winsome Winona and the magnificent Mr Slater should make cameos? And who are the noughties versions of these two brat-pack movie stars? As the ultimate high-school rebel, J.D himself tells us: “The extreme always seems to make an impression.”
