For years, hairdressers and barbers have looked to scissors and razors to help them earn a crust, but now one inventive stylist has created something new. Introducing ‘Clawz’, razor-sharp claws that attach to the fingers to help the stylist work quickly to trim unwanted hair in apparently half the time it takes using scissors. The novel tool was dreamed up by Floridian hairdresser, Valentino LoSauro who spent two years and £150,000 to make his vision a reality.

Valentino, who owns and manages the Planet Hair salon in Florida has been busy cutting hair for 35 years and wanted to find a way to blend his profession with his love of music. “The idea came to me in the late 90s,” he remembers. "I am a pianist as well as a hairdresser and wanted to combine that light fingered touch with my styling. So the Clawz were born as a simple idea to bring a musicality to hair styling. When I cut the hair I use methods I call “Flight of the Bumblebee” and “Zap”.

It didn’t happen overnight, the Clawz undergoing a number of modifications before Valentino settled on their current incarnation which he started selling back in 2001. Retailing for £60 each, the proud inventor’s managed to sell 30,000 pairs so far and, though they’ve required him to relearn his established hair-cutting techniques, he clearly thinks it was well worth it. “Now I can motor through hair cuts and they are much quicker than usual scissors,” he enthuses. “I can’t believe the time it took beforehand.”

And while he says many of his customers are “bit apprehensive at first,” he’s enlisted some celebrity clients to his Claws craze, having used them on Ritchie Sambora from Bon Jovi.
