Wales has been boosted by Harry Potter, Rome by Angels and Demons and hell, even Brüno’s done his bit for tourism in Austria, so who has the Glasgow Film Office turned to in their hour of need, when they require help in attracting movies to shoot on their turf? Ewan McGregor? James McAvoy? Or even the cinematic king of the Schscots, Sean Connery? Nope, none other than Gerard Butler, who, as the recently named favourite Hollywood Brit (see Related Content, right) is preparing to wave his Scottish flag in a bid to attract top talent to the north.

Born in Paisley, Butler is now the new ambassador for the Glasgow Film Office (GFO), which offers a free service helping productions with every aspect of filming in the city. Heading up the Glasgow Film Partnership, the GFO brings together other organisations such as the Scottish Opera and Glasgow City Council and united they want to make filming there as “simple as possible”.

In the past year, 15 productions have rucked up in the city, generating about £18 million for the local economy and with the star wattage of King Leonidas himself, they’re hoping for even more in 2010. “I’m very honoured to be asked to be Glasgow Film Office’s ambassador, anything I can do to support the local film and television industry is worthwhile,” enthused the star. “I wish Glasgow Film Office every success in the launch of the Glasgow Film Partnership and hope the benefits of this new initiative will lead to increased production in the city very soon.”

Maybe Gerard should consider donning his skimpy 300 costume to help rev up business!
