Find British film locations with Apple iPhone app
Posted by Team Boxwish 3 months ago
If you’re scared of getting cabin fever over the holidays, stuck indoors with the relatives, we’ve found the perfect movie distraction – the British Film Locations iPhone app. As the name suggests, this clever little app allows users to discover and photograph sites as seen onscreen, from Hogwarts School in the Harry Potter films to the Braveheart battlefields. Published by Dennis Publishing, it marks a collaboration between VisitBritain, the national tourism agency and etv media group and best of all – it’s FREE!
Bringing you the most famous and familiar movie locations in Britain today, the app also uses Google maps to put the site in context and it’s easy to navigate with users able to search by movie title. Adding to the experience, each site is provided with plenty of info, including a detailed synopsis and a description of how to find it.
And the partnering companies believe they’re tapping into a strong market by introducing the app, with VisitBritain’s research suggesting that 40 percent of potential visitors would like to trek to the places they’ve marveled at in the movies.
As such, it’s a collaboration that has excited both parties involved, with Justin Reid, the head of online at VisitBritain enthusing: “The VisitBritain message is clear, wherever you are in Britain you are never far from a British film location. This app will give visitors the opportunity to recreate their favourite scenes from some of our most iconic British films."
“Users can take pictures on location or make their own short films posting them on Facebook, Twitter or any of their social networking pages,” he continues. "2010 is going to be a massive year for film tourism to Britain and we are making sure our digital campaigning is at the forefront of these events.”
Indeed Britain has been much touted as a top movie location with upcoming treats like Nowhere Boy, The Wolfman and Robin Hood all promoting the country’s charms. And none more so than Sherlock Holmes, Guy Ritchie’s all-action reinvention of the Baker Street sleuth starring Robert Downey Jr.
Set in Victorian-era London, the movie has even partnered with VisitBritain for a tourism campaign (see Related Content, right) and on this subject, Andy Rogers, the managing director of etv online, added: “This Great British Film Location iPhone App is the perfect addition to VisitBritain’s digital campaign to celebrate the Sherlock Holmes movie."
So there you go, Boxwishers! A movie-inspired way to get outside this holiday season – if the snow doesn’t stop you that is!
