Film to TV remakes - the new Hollywood trend

When coming up with ideas for films, writers and producers have hoards of different places to look. Often books, toys and comics offer something inspirational, and if a television series does well you can almost guarantee a movie remake is in the pipeline, see Sex and the City and The X-Files: I Want to Believe. However, something we don’t see too often, at least not done successfully, is television remakes of films. There’s plenty of film-inspired kids cartoons or spin-off series which pick up where the film left off, but recently we’ve noticed that many films seem to be getting the small-screen treatment. We recently reported that this was happening to cult teen flick Heathers and the more recent The Time Traveler’s Wife. And with 1980’s inspired films such as Transformers and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra becoming so popular it’s no wonder that the next film to get the television makeover is Teen Wolf.

We’ve already had a revival of neon clothes and 80’s style music this year and now it seems Hollywood wants to have a go. Although there was a cartoon remake of Teen Wolf shortly after the film, MTV believe they can bring new life to the werewolf genre. Liz Gateley, senior VP of MTV series development said: “It has a fresh take and is very different from the original. It has more of an American Werewolf in Paris feel to it. It’s a dramatic thriller with two best friends in the centre who provide a great comedy element: They are two very relatable characters on the outer circles of popular cliques.” So it’s a teen werewolf series with horror, romance and werewolf mythology… sounds very similar to the currently popular horro-mantic hits Twilight and HBO’s True Blood.

Although no names have been announced for the series’ cast, it’s been written by Criminal Minds creator Jeff Davis who will work alongside Marty Adelstein and Rene Echevarria to executive produce it. With the boundaries between television and film actors becoming more blurred who knows who could star in this, or other new TV series. Perhaps Robert Pattinson will decide to cross to the dark side and play a werewolf next, or would that be stepping on Taylor Lautner’s paws? We highly doubt they’ll find anyone as cool as the eternal teenager Michael J. Fox to play the part of Scott Howard though.

Remember when the idea of making a TV series of the 1992 teen horror-comedy Buffy the Vampire Slayer film sounded ridiculous? It ran for seven seasons and sparked its own spin-off series! So what do you think of this trend Boxwishers? Remakes are dominating the film and television markets at the moment, could it be simply to get more people watching because they recognise the name and want to see what has happened to their old favourite? Do you think writers are simply getting lazy? Or have they run out of original ideas? It’s true that some of the old films and television series’ lacked the technology to recreate some of what they did anyway, but surely that’s part of the charm? What films would you like to see made into TV series? We like the idea of Se7en or Forrest Gump with a new adventure/discovery every week.
