Director explains why New York escapes demolition in 2012

If viewing new disaster flick 2012 is part of your plans this weekend (it hits cinemas from tomorrow), be prepared for non-stop cinematic carnage. Director Roland Emmerich has a proven flair for the destructive (Independence Day, Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow) and is again giving the world a mighty ass-kicking in his latest blockbuster, with the likes of everything from the Washington Monument to the Christ the Redeemer statue coming off second best against the elements (though interestingly not Islamic site, the Kaaba in Saudi Arabia, read more about that in Related Content, right). But it’s not just those local to the Kaaba that are breathing a sigh of relief as the German director has revealed another familiar corner of the globe that hasn’t attracted his onscreen ire – New York City.
It makes quite a departure for the helmer, who has often included the Big Apple in his movie mayhem. In Independence Day, the Empire State Building is exploded, in Godzilla the city is trampled on by a giant Japanese monster and in The Day After Tomorrow it’s hit by an enormous tsunami which floods the city before freezing with the advent of a new ice age. Never good to be a New Yorker when Emmerich’s in town.
And yet, he reveals that he’s omitted The City That Never Sleeps from 2012. “I’ve done it to the max,” explains Emmerich. “I just didn’t want to do it anymore. It was a conscious choice to stay away from New York this time.” So, why the decision, is he bored of the Big Apple?
“I knew people were going to say, “Oh Roland, so you’re destroying the world again.” And on top of it, “New York, how many times are you going to destroy that?” It was tempting, but I think New York is the coolest city in the world, so leaving it alone was nice.”
We suppose it does add some variety to the Emmerich disaster flicks and that’s to be welcomed. So do you think the absence of New York is a nice respite for the city or might it leave the film lacking the punch of that most famous and recognisable of locations?
