Clint Eastwood beats George Clooney as America’s preferred co-star

Here’s a little wish fulfilment fantasy for you on a frosty Friday, Boxwishers. Say you got that call from Hollywood, beckoning you to the bright lights and razzle dazzle of Tinseltown with a film offer on the table; and not only do you get to star in this top movie but you also get to choose its genre and your co-star. That was the rousing riddle posed to over 1,000 American adults in a poll by 60 Minutes and Vanity Fair and coming out on top was grizzled veteran Clint Eastwood in one of his trademark westerns. The choice to play cowboys with Oscar favourite, Clint scored 20 per cent of the vote, beating his nearest rivals George Clooney and Cameron Diaz in a rom-com into second place with 18 per cent. What not Steven Seagal in a direct-to-DVD B-movie?

The voting continued to be close further down the list with third place going to an action movie with Will Smith (15 per cent), fourth to a comedy with Will Ferrell (14 per cent) and fifth a drama with Meryl Streep (13 per cent). Though less love was shown to a Julie Roberts thriller, which only scored eight per cent and even fewer wanted to risk their neck in a martial arts showdown with Jackie Chan (four per cent).

The results make for interesting reading. It’s curious to see a western, a genre that has famously struggled in modern cinema, topping the poll, perhaps saying more about the popularity of Clint rather than the genre.

The 79-year-old has been top of the heap of Hollywood for decades with many people growing up with his TV work in the likes of Rawhide and in films such as the Dirty Harry thrillers; while he’s long boasted the male vote with his gruff no-nonsense heroes and earned female fans with more tender roles in the likes of 1995 romance, The Bridges of Madison County. And with 2008’s Gran Torino the biggest grossing of Clint’s many movies, it suggests he’s still got the ol’ magic, despite saying it will be his last acting role (perhaps another factor in people wanting to star with him).

Likewise, Clooney’s showing in joint second place with Diaz probably says more about him as an actor than the appeal of rom-coms. As while the genre is often a crowd-pleaser, gorgeous George isn’t its most famous proponent (his last one, Leatherheads being a flop).

But we think the most notable two results are Will Ferrell in third place (isn’t he supposed to be Hollywood’s most overpaid star?) and Jackie Chan’s mere four per cent. After all, this is the dare devil who has fractured his skull and broken everything from his sternum to his hips. We’d keep a wide berth too!

What do you make of the survey’s results, Boxwishers? Is Clint in a poncho your top pick or have you another killer combo not noted? Leave a comment and let us know.
