All year long they go neglected, desperate for us to notice them when grocery shopping, but we keep on walking, probably heading off to grab some doughnuts (or is that just us?). But then suddenly the calendar counts down to October and they become the most sought after veggies in the store. Yes, it’s a strange fate for pumpkins, those brightly coloured squashes becoming for many of us, the decorative pièce de résistance when Halloween strikes. We carve menacing faces into them, corrupting their healthy innocence into terrifying Jack-O’-Lanterns, yet year after year, repeating the same pattern can become boring and stale. Good job then for ZombiePumpkins.com, a website bursting with innovative and original pumpkin patterns certain to spook come Halloween and we particularly love their movie-inspired ones.

The site offers an impressive 211 pumpkin designs and is constantly adding new ones, with the patterns broken down into 13 categories such as movie monsters, heroic headliners and [Tim] Burton’s nightmares. It encourages people not to be deterred, saying: “Don’t doubt your skills, with these patterns anyone is an artist!” Advising: “Just follow the simple pumpkin carving tricks on the Terrifying Tips page and you’ll be shocked by your stunning monsterpiece, even on the first try!”

Having a trawl through the patterns, there are so many that catch the eye. So whether you want to recreate Johnny Depp’s Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland, The Joker’s (Heath Ledger) clownish grin from The Dark Knight or even the loved-up Bella (Kristen Stewart) and her vampire, Edward (Robert Pattinson) from Twilight (pictured), they’re all there. In fact, there’s such an overwhelming choice that we might have a fight on our hands for supremacy over the Team Boxwish pumpkin.

To have a stab (!) at the patterns, membership to the site is required and a small fee. The latter depends on how many designs you wish to view. Opt for all 211 with 10 bonus ones for just $20 or pick your favourite pair and sign up for the Bare Bones package for only $2. Some of the proceeds will be donated to charity, as is ZombiePumpkins.com’s annual tradition, with the My Stuff Bags Foundation benefitting this year.
