It’s one of the most distinctive and recognisable of Hollywood landmarks, famous around the world as a sidewalk monument to achievement in entertainment and the Hollywood Walk of Fame is still going strong. It’s endured a chequered past, becoming a haven for junkies and prostitutes, but the past couple of years have seen it restored to its former glory with millions of dollars of investment keeping the 2,300 stars nicely preserved. Just recently late crooner Roy Orbison and Oscar-winning actress Angelica Huston were honoured with stars and it’s a practice that some are hoping to bring to the UK with a touted London Walk of Fame.

Like its American counterpart, it would stream down a bustling pavement, likely to be along either Piccadilly or Shaftesbury Avenue placing it in the busy heart of the West End, and would look to applaud Britain’s national talent in the entertainment arena. It’s a scheme that earns the big thumbs up from PRS for Music (the Performing Rights Society that represents music publishers, songwriters and composers), who are calling for a London Walk of Fame.

“Hollywood is an amazing powerhouse for the entertainment industry of the USA,” says Ellis Rich, chairman of PRS for Music. “However, we would argue that the UK has an equally impressive track record with the artists who contribute to this deserving similar recognition.”

“What’s more, in a time of economic uncertainty, injecting some ‘pizzazz’ into London on behalf of the whole of the UK should be embraced,” he continues. “And, what better time to consider it, when we are just two years away from the Olympics when London will be the centre of the world stage, so let’s celebrate our entertainment medal winners too.”

The current criterion for the Hollywood Walk of Fame is broken into five categories: Contribution to the film industry, broadcast television, the recording industry, broadcast radio and live theatre. However PRS for Music wants to introduce a sixth consideration, contribution to the music industry (hello Simon Cowell!)

So what do you make, Boxwishers? Would you like a UK-based Walk of Fame and who would you like to see earn a star? Leave a comment below and let us know.
