Officially the fastest movie to make $1billion at the international box office and now the fourth highest grossing movie ever, James Cameron’s Avatar is proving to be an unstoppable movie juggernaut. And why not when there are so many hooks to lure you in, from the amazing 3D special effects to the return of the Oscar-winning director after a 12-year hiatus, from the star-making central performance from Sam Worthington to the belting soundtrack by James Horner. And proving to be one less expected source of appeal to cinemagoers is the fictional language spoken by the Na’vi, the alien race that inhabit the moon, Pandora. We’ve already touched on the Na’vi language here at Boxwish, reporting an interview given by its inventor, Professor Paul Frommer a few weeks back (see Related Content, right), however it’s not just us film fans eager to get to grips with the invented lingo as the movie’s leading lady, Zoe Saldana (she plays Na’vi heroine, Neytiri) also took a shine to it. So much so that she found herself speaking it off set.

Talking on the experience of learning the 1,000-word strong imaginary language, she revealed:“The Na’vi language was totally invented and we all had to learn it. I was worried at the beginning because I’m not good with languages, but it was tonnes of fun.”

And apparently not as tough to pick up as she’d dreaded as the Star Trek actress continues: "It turned out to be easier because I speak Spanish and the sounds are very similar. The crew learned a little Na’vi too. They picked up “skowng” which means moron. Needless to say, everyone had a little fun with that one."

But shaking off her alien role was a little harder. “My mom would look at me like I was crazy because I’d be at the dinner table slipping a little Na’vi into the conversation,” she adds. Sounds good to us, Zoe and indeed, Kaltxì to you (that’s hello fact fans).
