Is there nothing Avatar can’t do? People were yet to be convinced of 3D films, some doubted the relevance or vitality of filmmaker James Cameron and many mocked its blue cat-like aliens and yet the sci-fi blockbuster has had the last laugh. Who cares that it’s the most expensive film ever when it earns so much? And its appeal spreads so far that not only has it united with the likes of Coca-Cola, McDonalds and Mattel for high profile tie-ins, but even those just aren’t formally associated with it have benefited. Such is the case for the Restaurant Group, which has seen profits rise at its Frankie & Benny’s chain thanks to the restaurants being located at leisure parks where nearby cinemas are screening Avatar. Does Na’vi action give you an appetite for pasta and pizza?

Over half of Frankie & Benny’s Italian American restaurants are located at leisure parks, exactly 200 from 370, and these better-than-expected profits have given the company a much needed boost. When this update went public, shares in the company rose by five per cent and this was only for the last six weeks of the year until 27th December. With Avatar’s sustained success, these numbers could promise similarly good news for the 28th December onwards into the New Year.

It’s great news for the company, which like all others is struggling to perform well during the recession, and is an amazing testament to Avatar’s pulling power (and the unwillingness of Brits to cook when going to the cinema).

We wonder if other leisure park eateries and attractions have also benefitted from Avatar’s increase in footfall. Maybe more of us have been bowling, ice skating and swimming thanks to the 3D adventure. We await Gala Bingo’s profits with baited breath!
