A lot of the buzz in the office, (other than our excited reviews of Inglourious Basterds of course) is that surrounding James Cameron’s upcoming wildly fantastical Avatar. Following the release of the film trailer last Thursday (which soon became Apple’s most-viewed trailer of all time no less), and IMAX’s ‘Avatar day’ which gave hungry anticipators of the movie a 15 minute 3D preview introduced by the director of the moment himself, we give you this cool collectable: the Avatar amp suit maquette from Sideshow Collectibles.

This new little piece of movie memorabilia has been created exclusively with the film’s special effects studio, Legacy Effects, and is sure to keep you teetering even more precariously on your seats whilst awaiting the picture’s release on 18th December (not that we’re counting down the days you understand). With its perfectly scaled-down representation taken from 3D scans of the suits used in the movie, it stands at 30 inches of intricately detailed, hand-painted (and frankly quite menacing-looking) ‘mechanised military equipment’ – film-geek heaven.

Now here’s the bad news. Currently the model will set you back around $1199.99! So, one for the real die-hard sci-fi buffs among you, or perhaps those of you with a keen eye for some promising movie-memorabilia investments, just like this clever collector. Well if Spielberg has ear-marked it as the “biggest live-action 3D film ever” this might just be a wise buy…

The Avatar amp suit maquette is available to pre-order now at Sideshowtoy.com and is advertised for shipping in spring 2010.
