An Education scoops 17 nominations on BAFTAs longlist
Posted by Team Boxwish 2 months ago
Despite trying to sell itself as the British equivalent of the Oscars, there is an undeniably local whiff to the BAFTAs, with home-grown talent often triumphing despite stacked odds. And it’s once again the case as the longlist for this year’s celebration of cinema has been announced. Leading the pack with a whopping 17 nominations is coming of age drama, An Education, the least surprising of which going to its much acclaimed star, rising talent Carey Mulligan (soon to be seen as Michael Douglas’s daughter in Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps). There are also 15 for Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and six a piece for Avatar, District 9 and The Hurt Locker, many of which coming in the Make-up and Hair, Costume Design and Music categories – our primary focus here at Boxwish.
Indeed An Education scores in each of these three categories along with James Cameron’s Avatar (the sci-fi epic surely one of the favourites for Music thanks to James Horner’s epic score), Inglourious Basterds, period romance Bright Star, star-studded musical Nine and John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy.
Other notables battling out for both the Make-up and Hair and Costume Design gongs include the trendsetting Coco Before Chanel, franchise favourite Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, whimsical fantasy The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, low-key biopic Me and Orson Welles, sci-fi spectacle Star Trek, royal romp The Young Victoria and break-out hit District 9.
While happy with just the solo nod in these two categories are bleak drama The Road (Make-up and Hair), cookery comedy Julie & Julia (also Make-up and Hair), mystery actioner Sherlock Holmes (Costume Design – the costumes incidentally on display at the London Film Museum until the end of the month, see Related Content, right) and fashion designer Tom Ford’s directorial debut A Single Man (Costume Design – d’oh!)
There are a few new additions in the Music category such as acclaimed animation Coraline, Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones, Brit indie Moon, Ian Dury biopic Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll and George Clooney awards magnet Up in the Air. The list of ten also features some that are steadily racking up an impressive number of music award nominations, such as Jeff Bridges drama Crazy Heart, Roald Dahl adaptation Fantastic Mr Fox and Disney●Pixar blockbuster Up.
These lists reveal the first stage of BAFTA voting, while the second will see the categories whittled down to just five and will be announced on 21st January. And the final stage, confirming the winners will go down on 21st February with the showbiz shindig broadcast live on TV.
