PLOT SPOILERS!
Brad Pitt’s Benjamin Button might get his name in the movie’s title, but for female fashionistas it’s Cate Blanchett’s character Daisy Fuller that is the star attraction. This is nothing new for Blanchett. The Australian-born actress has long been celebrated for her personal sense of style being named the best dressed by the likes of People magazine, InStyle, Harpers Bazaar and Vogue and despite a film career full of eclectic and not always fashion-forward film roles, continues to dazzle onscreen starring in three of the last five films to win the Academy Award for Best Costume Design. Will The Curious Case of Benjamin Button add to this total and make it four out of six?
It would be far from surprising, the film’s costumes having been nominated for a number of international awards and each one the hard work of designer Jacqueline West. The costumier’s résumé boasts a number of period films including the Napoleonic era-based Quills (for which she was Oscar-nominated), the early 17th Century in The New World and the 1940s in gangster drama Lonely Hearts, all good training for the many styles and trends covered in the 87 years that make up TCCOBB.
To dress Pitt’s titular character in the touching romance that journeys from 1918 to 2003, West looked to cinema’s great leading men for her inspiration (namely Gary Cooper, Marlon Brando and Steve McQueen – read more about Benjamin Button’s look here), however the Hollywood archives proved less relevant for Benjamin’s love interest Daisy. Instead West found the look of Daisy in the character’s great passion – dance and specifically ballet.
