Vatican speaks out against The Twilight Saga: New Moon
Posted by Team Boxwish 4 months ago
File this one under “no, you don’t say” as apparently the Vatican is upset with The Twilight Saga: New Moon. After expressing disapproval at the Harry Potter books and films and likewise the Dan Brown efforts, The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons, the Catholic Church has now taken offense at the latest instalment of the Stephenie Meyer saga. Interesting that there was no need to grumble the first time around, when Twilight hit cinemas last year or even when the books were first published. But now that it’s a global phenomenon, there’s reason to get a bit uppity. Brace yourselves, here we go again…
According to Monsignor Franco Perazzolo of the Pontifical Council of Culture: “Men and women are transformed with horrible masks and it is once again that age-old trick or ideal formula of using extremes to make an impact at the box office.” He went on to add: “This film is nothing more than a moral vacuum with a deviant message and as such should be of concern.”
Are we concerned, Boxwishers? Of course not! We’re just concerned about whether the film will stay true to the book and that it’s good fun. The problem with the Vatican speaking out against every big film (and seemingly it’s only the blockbusters that concern them) is that after a while the message is diluted as we become desensitised to the same “tut tut, naughty” head-shaking and finger-wagging.
And it seems like the comments have had very little, if any impact in the Vatican’s own backyard as New Moon took £1.8 million at the Italian box office when it was released on Wednesday. Prepare for that number to go sky high…
For great Twilight and New Moon merchandise and products hit here.
