Triumph to produce replicas of Marlon Brando's leather jacket from The Wild One

It was back in 1953 that Marlon Brando’s rebellious gang leader, Johnny Strabler first rode onto the big screen on his 1950 Triumph Thunderbird 6T in biker classic The Wild One (or 1968 for British audiences), creating a monument to macho defiance and a craze for leather jackets. Fast forward 56 years later to 2009 and seemingly we still want to be part of Johnny’s gang, as Brando Enterprises (the company managing the late actor’s image) and Triumph Motorcycles have announced plans to design and produce a replica of the iconic leather jacket as seen on the movie biker. It will be a new addition for the Triumph Legends line of clothing and should be available from Triumph dealerships from 1st December.
The press release describes the jacket’s finer points, drawing attention to the quality craftsmanship: “The style is inspired by the original with a classic highway collar, shoulder epaulettes and pocket detailing; the leather is modern yet treated to give a vintage look and feel. The double impact seam stitching, CE certified shoulder and elbow protectors and a removable thermal vest lining make it both fashionable and functional for today’s motorcycle rider.”
And in support of the quality of the construction are those details which only a true film aficionado know to look for. “This modern day replica includes key features of Brando’s original jacket right down to the embroidered ‘Johnny’ name tag and the BRMC distressed print on the back of the jacket,” continues the blurb. If only this had come a year earlier it could have tied-in with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, in which Shia LaBeouf’s Mutt Williams enters the action riding a bike and dressed just like Brando. Opportunity missed.
Not that either Brando Enterprises or Triumph Motorcycles exhibits anything but incredible excitement at the upcoming product, with Ian O’Reilly, the clothing, merchandise and licensing manager at the latter enthusing: “It was an honour to work with Mr Brando’s estate and while many will want the jacket as a must-have collector’s item, we are confident we’ll be seeing this beautiful item on streets and freeways worn by motorcyclists everywhere.”
No news as yet on pricing, though Triumph’s men’s leather jackets tend to be in the £200 to £300 bracket. Or if you’re looking for something a little lighter, both to wear and on your wallet, there are also plans for limited edition men’s and ladies’ T-shirts decorated with Brando in his memorable pose from the movie. Sounds like a whole new generation of Wild Ones…
