Celebrated and recognised across the globe as the home of the film industry, Hollywood and the wider district of Los Angeles isn’t always easy for filmmakers to shoot in. As film crews head to places like Vancouver and Chicago, both famed for the tax breaks they offer productions (incentives that have worked their magic on the likes of money-spinners such as The Dark Knight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon), the sprawling Californian city has sometimes struggled to hold onto the dream factory it’s known for. Films like 500 Days of Summer have recently done their bit to put L.A. back on the movie map, featuring sights such as the Bradbury Building and the Barclay Hotel, but of all the local hotspots that challenge filmmakers the Hollywood sign has been named the most problematic in a new survey.

The iconic landmark came top of the list assembled by the Los Angeles City Council which sought to gauge which parts of the city proved the most difficult for filmmakers, with the varying degrees of bureaucratic regulations informing the list. The criteria being further broken down into rental costs, government regulations, securing permits and problems with catering for the cast and crew.

It beat the likes of the Griffith Park Observatory (seen recently in Yes Man) and the Los Angeles Zoo and in response to the survey’s findings, Council president Eric Garcetti said: “Los Angeles is the film capital of the world, but there are too many places in which we tell filming to go away.”

Though in fairness to the Hollywood sign, the industry hasn’t always been treated well by filmmakers; being swept away by a tornado in The Day After Tomorrow, crumbling after a landslide in Earthquake and all charred and burnt in Terminator Salvation. We reckon it’s just getting its own back!
