Last week, we snooped around the chic wardrobe of The Twilight Saga’s gentleman vampire, Edward (Robert Pattinson) stealing his style and now we’ve got the lowdown on his clothes, we’re turning our attention to his hair. Oh, the hair. When it comes to Edward seemingly nothing matters more in his look than his hair. Stephenie Meyer fixates on the bronzed barnet of the Cullen heart-throb throughout the books and fittingly, it was sculpted and showy in the first Twilight film, with Robert even joking recently that “in a lot of ways the hair is 75 per cent of my performance.” Back then it was head hairstylist Mary Ann Valdes and Beverly Hills salon owner Stuart Gavert making the decisions, but this time around, for The Twilight Saga: New Moon, key hairstylist Thom McIntyre is calling the shots and wielding the scissors…

Unlike the more elaborate efforts applied to the likes of Kristen Stewart as Bella (see Related Content, right), things were kept quite simple when styling Robert as Edward, a change of direction that pleased the actor. “In the second one [movie] I said, ‘’Listen, I need to tone down the hair. Let’s make it a little more real,’’” he revealed to Entertainment Weekly. Not that this means an end to the famous Cullen coiffure, it’s just a little less high, less obvious and more realistic.

So, what work went into it? Over to Thom McIntyre. “Robert’s got very thick hair with a bit of wave to it,” he reveals, “so his hairstyle was his essentially his haircut.” And this haircut consists of keeping the sides short, more length at the front and back and a choppy roughness throughout for that textured, tousled look. This just-fallen-out-of-bed look (so unsuitable for a vampire that doesn’t sleep!) was perfected by McIntyre rubbing pomade between his hands and twisting the strands of Robert’s hair. “You just don’t want this look to be flat or sleek,” he adds.

Keeping this most fixated upon hairstyle perfect proved an important job for McIntyre and his team, who revealed the day to day care required. “I trimmed his hair probably every week to ten days, just to keep the cut really fresh and chopped into,” says the hairstylist. “When we were shooting, I restyled it once or twice a day – the look is meant to be very tousled, and I wanted to be sure it didn’t lay flat.”

Good job then, that with these constant touch-ups Robert’s hair is up to the job. “I have to say, Robert’s was probably the best [hair],” admits McIntyre. We knew it!
