It scooped oodles of Oscars, put star Anthony Hopkins firmly on Hollywood’s A-list and made fava beans and Chianti just about the scariest meal ever. Just thinking about it is enough to give you chills and so it’s not surprising that 1991’s The Silence of the Lambs has been voted the best thriller in a new poll. The adaptation of the bestselling novel by Thomas Harris scored 25 percent of the vote in the Yahoo! Movies poll, which was conducted to celebrate the release of French film, Anything For Her starring Diane Kruger out in UK cinemas today. And which other movies did Hannibal Lecter beat? Click over to find out.

Coming a close second in the survey was David Fincher’s gory Se7en with 20 percent and in third place was Jack Nicholson finding that “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” in Stanley Kubrick’s chilling version of the Stephen King classic, The Shining (11 percent). Making up the top five was 50s-based crime noir LA Confidential in fourth with 10 percent and Sharon Stone’s saucy leg-crossing in Basic Instinct fifth with 8 percent.

The rest of the top ten shaped up like this: 6. Cape Fear and 7. Taxi Driver both with 7 percent. 8. Fatal Attraction with 5 percent. 9. Falling Down with 4 percent and 10. Memento with 3 percent.

In response to the findings, Yahoo! Movies’ editor Kimberly Smith commented: “It’s no surprise to see that Silence of the Lambs comes up as Yahoo! Movies audience’s most terrifying thriller. The film is iconic with Anthony Hopkins’s frightful performance as the psychotic Dr Hannibal Lecter and Jodie Foster’s vulnerable and naive turn as the FBI agent who must win the criminal’s trust.”

It was certainly a popular choice earning a quarter of the votes and anyone that’s witnessed the creepy stare and scary soft voice of Hopkins’s Lecter will find it hard not to agree. But take a close look at the top ten and there are some interesting findings. Six of the top ten were produced in the 90s; four have their roots in novels; three starred Michael Douglas and two Robert De Niro, Kevin Spacey, Guy Pearce and Jodie Foster. So, what do we make of this poll’s findings Boxwishers – agree, disagree or not too fussed?
