You know us. We’re not ones to condone nasty violence here at Boxwish (though we’d pay through the roof to see the Terminator cyborgs take on the Transformers – make that crossover movie now!) And so we want to be clear that the weapons we’re about to tell you about are nothing but replicas of props. They can’t really hurt people and so are ever so safe, so if you’re thinking of getting one, please assure your girlfriend/ wife/ mum [delete as applicable] that they’re not dangerous to have around the house. Done that? Cool, now check out these completely kick-ass and freakin’ awesome District 9 replicas and prepare to part with your cash.

District 9 has been quite the sci-fi sensation, a low-budget flick from a nobody director that stormed the box office and has now picked up an incredible four Oscar nominations, propelling its unknown lead actor Sharlto Copley onto the Hollywood A-list with upcoming flicks like The A-Team. And while a possible tie-in video game for District 9 gets mulled over, they’ve been a bit quicker off the bat at Weta Workshop, the award-winning design and manufacture team which worked on the movie, which has now produced and is selling some fantastic prop replicas of two of the weapons as seen onscreen.

Firstly, there’s the gas projector wielded by the film’s criminals made to the exact dimensions of the original, albeit from glass fibre and other materials and incapable of firing. The blurb reads: “This gun comes battle worn, alien gunk oozing out of its couplings and all the scratches and markings you’d expect from tough action in District 9 and by handling by Nigerian gun runners.”

Also boasting its battle scars comes the second piece, the arc generator, essentially a laser rifle, seen in the movie being used by the aliens or “prawns”. It’s fashioned from the same materials and both items are being created in limited edition numbers, just 200 of each. This means they’re far from cheap, NZD $710.22 for one (roughly £311 or USD$489), but for such a cool collectible, we totally get it.

Keep up the great work Weta and looking forward to checking out your work in the much talked about The Hobbit which we can’t wait for!

Check out the props and pre-order them here.
