Our first listen to Danny Elfman's score for The Wolfman

Film composer Danny Elfman has two exciting musical scores set to be released soon. There’s his one for Alice in Wonderland, which continues his long-time screen collaborations with director Tim Burton and his one for gothic horror, The Wolfman. We’ve already heard (and loved) a few samples of the Alice score (see Related Content, right), yet things have seemingly been less smooth-sailing for The Wolfman’s music, which, as we’ve reported has been a hokey-cokey of in-out-shake-it-all-about nonsense. First Elfman was onboard, then he’d left the project and been replaced by Paul Haslinger and then he was back in. It made us tired just trying to keep up, but now we’ve gotten a more substantial taste of Elfman’s The Wolfman music as preview samples of it have been posted online.

Details of the soundtrack have been revealed on the website of record label, Varese Sarabande and now we know to expect a 19-track album (see the full listing below). And four of these tracks, namely "Wolf Suite Part 1,” “Gypsy Massacre,” “Country Carnage” and “The Traveling Montage” can be previewed.

A quick listen confirms that the music, described as being “classically Gothic” and “Transylvania-flavoured” is just as it says on the tin, with Elfman’s soaring strings adding beauty to the dark and dense moments and the tempo happily skipping between slow and searching and rapid and unrelenting.

Music and movies blog, The Playlist says it’s “fairly underwhelmed” by these samples, complaining that three out of the four pieces “seem like very rote, period piece/chase music/moody music material,” which isn’t “much to be excited about”. While, in contrast, FearNet is more encouraged, calling it “fairly promising,” and picking out “Wolf Suite Part 1” for particular praise, hailing it as “very effective”.

Here at Boxwish, we like what we’ve heard so far and, considering all the on-set shenanigans with personnel, think its sounds cohesive, unsettling and just the thing for a supernatural spookfest. To check out the previews for yourself, click here and do tell us what you make of it. Can it compete with Elfman’s work on Alice, or is it just something to whet your whistle before the Wonderland album drops?
