Dressing up in your characters’ costumes can be an unpredictable movie minefield for actors. The likes of Keira Knightley and Kate Winslet often squeeze themselves into unforgiving corsets for period romps, or for Keira on the set of The Duchess, headache-inducing wigs, and even Jude Law has spoken recently of the agonies faced by an overly-starched collar when playing Dr Watson in Sherlock Holmes. Alternatively, it can be a fun chance to update your own wardrobe, as the likes of Cameron Diaz, Christopher Walken and Jesse Eisenberg have all found, nabbing clothes to don off-set. However, for Superbad star Michael Cera that trip to the wardrobe department proved a liberating adventure, enabling him to get to grips with clothes he wouldn’t normally try on. Like dresses.

The 21-year-old who shot to fame as George Michael in the much-missed sitcom, Arrested Development, indeed got to really mix things up when shooting his latest movie, Youth in Revolt. An adaptation of C. D. Payne’s 1993 novel of the same name, this comedy romance sees Michael star as Nick Twisp, a horny youngster who hopes to ditch his unlucky in love past by assuming a more worldly, playboy alter ego (Francois Dillinger) to secure the girl of his dreams. And as the fearless Francois, he’s recognisable, albeit different thanks to some contact lenses, a more sophisticated wardrobe and, that trademark of all smoothies everywhere, a moustache!

“I was really excited to play that part and I had a lot of fun doing it. It was just fun to get to wear contacts, put a moustache on, transform how I looked, say really gross things and smoke,” reveals Michael. And it wasn’t just the jaunty white slacks and powder blue shirt that made him smile, but other less macho outfits as he also dons a dress, an experience that proved surprisingly bearable.

“I was just relieved to have something on,” he explains. “I was doing a scene with just boxers on before that, so it was just nice to not have people see me as much. That’s why it was so comfortable. I don’t think I was thinking about the dress. I was trying to remember what to say.”

Yeah, yeah, we believe you. You only liked the dress ‘cos it was comfy, sure sure. Then you’ll be wearing one to the supermarket and saying its laundry day and all your trousers are in the wash, or wearing it to weddings and pretending it’s actually a kilt. We’ve heard this one before…
