King Kong model fetches over £120,000 at auction

If the onscreen King Kong hit the heights by climbing to the top of the Empire State Building, so a 22-inch model of the giant ape has followed suit by earning an impressive £120,000 at auction. The rare collectible was the show stopper at Christie’s vintage and collectibles poster auction in South Kensington yesterday and though it was estimated to take in up to £150,000, the £121,250 splashed on it isn’t to be sniffed at in these times of economic hardship.
The unique item was bought by an anonymous bidder and was joined by hundreds of other movie gems, including retro James Bond posters and clothing and jewellery belonging to Marilyn Monroe.
On the King Kong metal armature, Neil Roberts, the head of popular memorabilia at Christie’s said: “This King Kong armature was instrumental in filming one of the most recognisable sequences in cinema history, and as such it is an exceptional relic of film memorabilia. We are thrilled to have seen such excitement leading up to the auction and to have been able to exhibit the model to the public for the first time, and we are pleased to have realised a notable price which reflects its importance.”
And if you’re a collector of movie trinkets, look out for news about the upcoming Angels Costumiers uniform sale later in the week.
