Jude Law reveals Sherlock Holmes costume was like a "razor blade"

While the likes of Cameron Diaz, Jesse Eisenberg and Christopher Walken are keen to pinch costumes they’ve worn in movies, we reckon Jude Law’s a little pickier about what he wears. The Brit actor currently wowing Broadway audiences with his portrayal of Shakespeare’s classic tragic hero, Hamlet, has impressed with his screen togs over the years, looking achingly stylish in the likes of Alfie and The Talented Mr Ripley, yet he wasn’t quite so enamoured with what he wore for his latest movie, Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, saying it felt like a “razor blade” against his throat. It’s a tough life being a film star, eh?

Jude plays Dr Watson, the erstwhile sidekick of Robert Downey Jr.‘s erratic Sherlock Holmes in the action romp, and as befitting the Conan Doyle stories the film’s based on, he donned Victorian-era clothing. And while it’s not the first time he’s worn period costumes (Cold Mountain, Enemy at the Gates, Wilde) it has been the first time he’s been in such incredible discomfort.

“I had to wear this terribly stiff, tight collar as part of my costume which was just horrible,” he reveals. “On the first day I actually tried staying in character and wearing it to lunch. It was like trying to swallow sushi with a razor blade around my neck!”

The lesson learned – change out of your costume when eating. Or have a sly word with the costume designer (in this case, Oscar-winner Jenny Beaven) and find a cunning way around it. If Michael Gambon can get his costumer to put a pocket for his cigarettes into his wizarding robes for Harry Potter, you can get a comfy collar!
