Hampshire museum to display movie props, showbiz costumes and more
Posted by Team Boxwish 2 months ago
Often when reporting on cool movie-related exhibitions, we here at Boxwish HQ go a little green. Not because there’s something manky in our water supply or we’re endowed with Hulk-like qualities and are moments away from bursting out of our clothes; but because these events, which we’d love to attend, are usually too far away for us to trek to. So imagine our excitement when we found one that’s practically on our doorstep. Welcoming you to the upcoming “Up Close and Personal” exhibition at The Willis Museum in Basingstoke, Hampshire, which, from the end of the month, will bring a little showbiz spice to the south with movie props and cherished mementoes and wardrobe belonging to Hollywood’s finest. Who knew Basingstoke could be so glam?
In the movie memorabilia corner, we’re promised all sorts of exciting treats from cinema through the ages. For comedy fans there’s a cast of the Loki mask as worn to hilarious effect by Jim Carrey in The Mask, the shirt Mike Myers donned as shagadelic 60s spy, Austin Powers in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, a coat from Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey (maybe that hideous lilac one as seen on Bill when talking to God) and other props from The Addams Family and The Flintstones.
For action and sci-fi lovers, check out the electro-magnetic boots as worn at the futuristic Erehwon prison in John Travolta/ Nicolas Cage blockbuster, Face/Off, props from blubtastic record-breaker, Titanic and comic book caper, Batman (we presume the Tim Burton 1989 effort, the museum doesn’t specify) and memorabilia associated with sc-fi smash, Star Wars.
While music aficionados can get up close and personal with a guitar once belonging to rock’n’roll legend, Chuck Berry and a “Dangerous” Tour jacket as worn by the much-missed Michael Jackson or if girl power’s more your thing, marvel at the white platform boots so famously seen on Spice Girl, Geri Halliwell.
Those looking for a little more girlie glamour are served some vintage delights in the form of Elizabeth Taylor’s earrings, Doris Day’s rhinestone bracelet (we thought she could have afforded diamonds!) and Cher’s necklace. However, the real piece de resistance is undoubtedly a little black dress belonging to screen sex siren, Marilyn Monroe, said to have been her favourite.
All these goodies and more will be on display at The Willis Museum from Saturday 23rrd January until 27th March and most happily, admission is free. A brilliant budget-friendly dose of movie magic.
