Just recently Robert Pattinson (you know him? He’s some fella in some film about vampires or something) lamented the lack of acting jobs in the UK, explaining that’s why so many Brits head to Hollywood for work. And boy, he’s certainly right. Tinseltown is chokers with UK talent, both in front of the camera and behind, men and women and character actors as well as top leading lights. And so with this wealth of home-grown stars, online rental giant LOVEFiLM has asked their subscribers to vote for their top British actor and coming out on top is none other than Scottish beef-cake, Gerard Butler. Yup, the Paisley-born actor has channelled his sparkly-eyed charm into both boys favourites like 300, Unlawful Citizen (pictured) and RocknRolla and more female-friendly fare like The Ugly Truth and P.S. I Love You and it’s obviously worked well for him. But who did he beat in the poll? Click over to find out.

Making do with second and third place were Batman aka Christian Bale and two-time Oscar-winner Daniel Day-Lewis (who’ll be seen next in musical Nine), and at number four came the first female, fellow Academy favourite, Kate Winslet. Fifth was another Scot, this time Wanted star James McAvoy and sixth? Nope. The poll doesn’t seem to report on who came sixth (maybe we should make it up, so just insert whoever you fancy), while back to those it did confirm.

Seventh place went to The Twilight Saga’s Robert Pattinson (The Twilight Saga: New Moon is out today – huzzah! Though more of that later); eighth to gruff hardman Jason Statham; ninth to another Scot (that males three), former Jedi and current Man who Stares at Goats, Ewan McGregor and rounding out the list came only the second lady, Emily Blunt.

Over 1,000 movie fans had their say in the poll, upon which Helen Cowley, editor at LOVEFiLM said: “The poll shows that Butler and Bale have got some real bite in Hollywood. And even though Robert Pattinson is getting some deserved attention, it’s the older generation of actors that still have sway in Hollywood.”

We hope that doesn’t make Gerard sound like he’s ready for his pension, but does draw attention to the absence of elder statesmen of cinema such as Michael Caine, Ian McKellan and Anthony Hopkins, with Day-Lewis the oldest at 52.

What do you make of the poll, Boxwishers? Is Gerard top with you or not? Leave a comment and let us know.
